Using live captions in a Teams meeting

Teams meetings support live captions, enabling you to read what others are saying.

Starting live captions on the Teams Desktop application

Note! Only signed-in users (e.g. the meeting host) can change the spoken language setting.

Live captions can also be shown in another language using automatic translation, but this feature is available only for signed in users to the Teams desktop application.

1. In the meeting, click the More () button, click the Language and speech button, then click the Turn on live captions button.

2. If prompted, select the spoken language and click the Confirm button.

Note! Selecting a spoken language changes this setting for all participants.

Live captions can be seen below the meeting.

Users not signed into Office 365 should click the More () button, then click the Turn on live captions button.

Stopping live captions on the Teams Desktop application

1. In the meeting, click the More (button, Click the Language and speech button, then Click the Turn off live captions button.

Users not signed into Office 365 should click the More () button, then click the Turn off live captions button.

Changing the speaker language

Note! Only for signed-in users fo the Teams desktop application. Selecting a spoken language will change the spoken language setting for all participants.

1. Click the More () button in the live caption area.

2. Click the Change spoken language button.

3. Select the spoken langage and click the Confirm button.

The spoken language has been changed.

Activating live caption translation and changing the translation language

Note! Only for signed-in users of the Teams desktop application. Automatically translated captions are not always reliable.

If you want the live captions to be automatically translated into another language:

1. Click the More (…) button in the live caption area.

2. Click the Subtitles button.

3. Click the language you would like to have the translation in.

The live captions will now display in the automatically translated language.

Being identified in live captions

Note! Only for signed-in users of the Teams desktop application.

If you dont want to be identified as the speaker in live captions, it is possible to change this option in the Teams desktop application settings.

1. In the Teams desktop application, click the More () button, then click the Settings button.

2. Click the Captions and transcripts setting, then turn of the Automatically identify me in meeting captions and transcripts.

After this, you will not be recognised by name in Teams meetings live captions.

Starting live captions on the Teams Mobile application

1. In the meeting, tap the More (…) button.

2. Tap the Turn on live captions button.
