Show file extensions in Windows

Estimated reading: 1 minute

Enabling file extensions visibility is recommended. You can quickly see what type of file you are dealing with. For example, .docx refers to a Word document and .jpg refers to a JPEG image file.

Some malicious files can have misleading extensions. For example, a harmful script might appear as an image file if the extension is hidden.

Some programs may require a specific file format. Extensions help you ensure that the file is the correct format.
